Hi all,

I am new to this forum and would like some help on how to take clear/bright pictures of my newborn son. I have an S3IS and love it but am having trouble taking pics of my boy that don't come out fuzzy.

I normally use my camera in the P mode, AWB or cloudy, ISO 80 or 100 (200 in low light).

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd advise posting this question in the Canon digicam forum as you might get more specific help regarding your camera.

You'll need to determine whether the fuzziness is due to camera shake or poor focus. If it's camera shake, you'll need to make sure the image stabilization function is active. If it's on but you still get camera shake, try using shutter priority mode (probably S on the dial) and set it to 1/15 or faster. Use less zoom (reduces camera shake and opens the aperture more). Finally, turn up the ISO if you need to, though I don't know how high would be too high on that camera.

If the problem is focus, make sure the AF assist lamp is active (assuming it doesn't use the flash as an AF assist lamp, I'm assuming you're trying to not use the flash). Using less zoom might help. If you zoom in too much from close-up you may go beyond the lens's minimum focus distance.
