Hmmm...

Okay. Oh yes, I forgot to mention one thing. The flip cover of the memory card slot is loose as in it does not click shut, but is stuck shut with a good sello tape (rudimentary.. I know). This was the case even when the playback mode was working fine.

Anyways, I hope this is nothing big? And the service centre guys should be able to deal with it...?

Thanks again, and sorry for sounding paranoid. I was just beginning to feel really bad given that I've held this thing for about 24 hours and it was already acting up.

One last thing. This camera belongs to a benefactor who wants to move on to dSLRs and is willing to give it to me for about $200, maybe less. He's used it for about a couple of years and taken about 900 odd shots on it when it came to me. (I know the sequence can be reset, but doubtful that this guy would do that). Apart from the flip cover part and now the playback mode issue, the camera is working just great.

Is the price okay? Given that I might have to spend on replacing the switch. Not sure how much that would be.

You can probably see how many photos are on the camera using Opanda IExif (a free EXIF viewer) by viewing the EXIF from one of the photos produced by the camera. It knows how to decipher the maker notes section and decode this information from a number of Nikon models:

http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html

As for the price, I'd see what they're selling for on Ebay, and I'd probably assume a $200 repair cost to get it fixed in the U.S. (provided it's not a gray market camera, which Nikon won't service). I've seen people mention about that same repair cost for problems with Coolpix models in the past. I don't know if Nikon in your country would charge more or less.
