The same thing applies to any lens (use a 1.6x multiplier to see the focal length you'd need on a 35mm camera for the same angle of view).

The normal kit lens with the XT is an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.

No, an 18-55mm lens is still an 18-55mm lens. The focal length is not changing. ;-)

Only the angle of view (apparent magnification) is changing.

You'll have wider angle of view for any given focal length lens with a larger sensor or film size, and you'll have a narrower angle of view with a smaller sensor or film size. The focal length does not change.

The only reason to use the focal length multipliers with lenses on a dSLR is to give you an idea of how the angle of view compares with the focal length needed on a 35mm camera, mostly because 35mm cameras are very popular. ;-)

As for the kits, some vendors may bundle a lens like the 28-90mm in a kit with an XT. But, the standard kit lens is an 18-55mm.
