I want to buy a used Nikon D40 that has had just under 5,000 shutter actuations. Is 5,000 shutter actuations a lot for a D40?

i dont have a nikon i have an olympus e300 and can shoot about 2000 shots in a 2 week holiday ..........easily

5000 isnt very many at all.

when buying 2nd hand compare carefully with cost of new camera with Warranty and Guarentee, then decide if its worth it

I think the D40 is reckoned to be good for about 50,000 shutter activations. But it's only ever going to be an average and some will last longer some less.
