Default Need help with apature settings

I am trying to take photos with the apature set so that my subject is clear but background blurry. Do I set the apature number on the camera high or low to achieve this effect? Thanks.

As I understand it - for the subject to be clear with blurry background the aperture number needs to be small (therefore a large physical aperture I think - that always confuses me).

The way I remember it (rightly or wrongly) is to think of it in terms of 'distance'...the higher the aperture number - the more of the distance will be in focus.

Apologies if I've really confused you.

Thats right mattUK.

As long as you keep the large keyhole (small aperture number thus less focus depth) and the tiny pinhole (high aperture number thus large focus depth) in mind, the depth of field makes sense.
