Default what does Normal, Fine and Superfine mean?

what does Normal, Fine and Superfine mean? I see this term next to the resolution sizes on the chart of how many fotos can fit on a 32 or 64 card...
I think its the compression or something like that, I am not sure.......
Thanx

These settings are compression levels of the pictures stored on your camera's card. These are the names Canon uses... other manufacturers use other names for their compression levels. Most cameras have another setting, RAW. The Canon RAW files are bigger than their other options (smaller than some other manufacturers) but let you alter the pictures outside the camera.

There's some good info in your owner's manual about compression.
