Default New camera but no USB on older Mac :-(

I have no USB and no open PCI slots on my 7300 Mac. My plan was to go to my local Kinko's and copy the compact flash images onto a zip disc. The problem is: Kinko's doesn't have compact flash card readers. Is there any solution besides getting a new computer with USB or exchanging one of my PCI cards for a USB card (and card reader)? I'm hoping there is an easy solution that will (temporarily) let me get my images into my 7300. It's my first digital camera and I'm really excited about using it. Thanks for your help.

i think you'll have to make steve jobs happy but we'll try to prevent that.

what is populating all your pci slots?

does your mac support/have firewire?

My three PCI slots contain:

(1) ixMicro Ultimate Rez connected to a 19" monitor
(2) Sonnet Tempo ATA card
(3) ixMicro Turbo TV card (it's nice to be able to watch tv sometimes)

No firewire.

I heard of a new card from Sonnet (called the "Tempo Triple"?) that has ATA, Firewire, and USB all on one card. It's around $175 on Sonnet's site. I'm not sure if it has been released yet. This would be a solution (but not an economical one). Maybe I could replace the TV card with a USB card.

it's called the "tempo trio"

due to apple shorting you a pci slot or two (only 3?)that looks to be a more than an adequate answer to your problem. it give you the whole nine yards. firewire, usb 2.0 (1.1) and your ata controller.

i myself am no longer a big tv fan so i could loose t tv card. but thats me.

as far as cost. you say it's $175. it sounds real reasonable due to a fairly substantial gain you make. the fastest most versitile i/o ports and extending the life of your mac.

also factor in the cost and time of hitting up kinkos every other week or so.

if your going to off the tv card (no real loss) do the sonnet tango and get your self some firewire while your at it. but it is only usb 1.1 capable

shop around. i know applecentric components command a premium (gotta keep mr. jobs in birkenstocks) but if you dig some someone is always willing to sell for a little less.

i'd do the trio. more bang for the buck.

it also seems your slowly running low on options with ixmicro gone too

Thanks for your comments sjms. I was wondering if I had overlooked anything obvious and wanted another opinion.

I've decided to remove the TV card and replace it with a $20 USB card. This is the most economical solution.

I've ordered the camera (Canon A40) and should have my hardware set up when it gets here. I'll be back with more questions, I'm sure. Thanks again for your help.

Steevoe

There's always the discontinuedFotoShow that you can still get at Ritz. It automatically downloads both CF and SM to a Zip disk like you 1st thought and double as a TV viewer/slideshow with fancy fade-in/out features, and even come with a remote for couch potato editing!

BTW it also double as a Zip drive (alas no USB port for you)... LOL
