Default Replacement lens

Recently bought a Canon digital xti. Seperately pruchased 70-300 and a 28-80 lenses.
Was pretty happy with that combination but 28-80 stopped auto-focusing. The guy at the camera store said it would be chaper to buy a replacement lens than to repair the 28-80. He suggested the 18-200.
Is he correct?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Replacing the 28-80 with the 18-200 is a bit of overkill, especially since you've got the 70-300. The Canon 18-55 IS is a very good lens, and an able replacement for your 28-80.

You might also want to consider the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5. It's very good, faster than the lenses you've got now, and it's a 1:2.3 macro lens to boot.

the Canon 18-55 IS is a bit sharper than the Sigma and it has Image Stabilisation, the Sigma is still a good lens in regard to sharpness and it fills the focal lengths all the way up to the 70mm you have on the tele zoom.

It's a hard call, I have a 17-70 in my kit list and I've been pleased with it. I had it when I was a Minolta/Sony user before moving to Canon when I bought it again.

Here are reviews of the 2 lenses on the same body.
