For white balance, either will work, but for exposure, only a gray card will work.

Unfortunately, camera manuals tell you to use something white to set white balance, so people think they can use a wall or a ceiling or a shirt to set white balance. Unless you happen to carry around a slab of magnesium oxide, pure white is hard to find.

Personally I carry a white card in a ziplock bag for the custom wb.

From class a very long time ago, I was told white for white balance, gray to lock exposure. Or you can use the palm of you hand for exposure, and adjust it by 1 full f-stop darker.

I carry an 18% gray microfiber lens cleaning cloth. How's that for a multipurpose device?

I carry a patented "White Balence Dog." Extremely useful and I will be happy to sell you the lastest model. Totally portable, and easy to use. Simply include the WBD in a test shot, and use this as your model for all scenes in that context. As you change scenes, simply take a first shot with the WBD.

Price is negotiable...

LOL,

I've seen your urban wolf. That upkeep of a wbd would be more then just the card over the year. Thanks for the offer though.
