Default Help needed regarding RAW conversion in Nikon View

I am using a Nikon Coolpix 5700 set on automatic.

I am finally understanding the very basic concept that the camera itself makes the conversion from RAW to jpeg or tiff, whichever I choose. Thus, thanks to advice from this forum, I am starting to use Nikon RAW files from the camera.

As an amateur who basically wants very good prints of the baby/family, etc., my question is:

When the Nikon View program converts the RAW files to either TIFF or JPEG in the computer, does it do a better job than the camera?

Please bear in mind that I don't really edit my pictures, I just choose the best ones to print.

Does this program automatically choose the best methods of conversion (white balance, exposure, sharpness, etc)? I was told that the RAW files essentially bypass some of the automatic settings in the camera.

Thanks for your help.

the whole point of RAW is that it allows you to do everything giving you greater post shoot control. if your just a P&S shooter your not going really touch anything there. as long as your satified with what you see. one of the greatest advantages is the ability to control exposure somewhat after the fact. allowing you to adjust for under and over exposures up to 2 stops. if you were into editing and were using PS/CS you can adjust tint, exposure, color temp, correct for some lens anomolies, and more.
