What do lens hoods do for your shots?

Lens hoods block extraneous light from bouncing around inside the lens elements, causing flare. They also provide some protection for a lens by fending off things that might come in contact with the front element of the lens.

A lens hood also gives a bit of protection from twigs, rocks, salt water, ... coming from the side.

Couple of tips if you start using lens hoods:

- Always remove the lens hood when using flash that is built into the camera. Because of the close proximity of the flash to the lens, there will be a shadow in the lower portion of flash images if the hood is left on. --- It's not a problem if your camera has a hot shoe, and an external flash is used.

- If your camera has electronic zoom and you're using auto focus, it's possible on some cameras to mount the lens hood facing backwards when using flash. This prevents the hood shadow and you don't have find someplace to store the hood. --- But this trick won't work if using cameras with manual zoom and manual focus on the lens, like the FZ50 camera for example.
