Also newbie with ZS7, more camera than I know what to do with. Are there any short training manuals to teach me to use most/all of the features?

Default tips

I'd say go through the manual and try each of the features.

It's important that your camera is very familiar to you, because you don't want to lose a great shot because your fumbling around due to a lack of familiarity.

After that, it's really about general photography skills.

The best way to improve your skills is study someone's photographs who's style you truly admire and try to figure out what they are doing.

I've copied the style of one of my favorite photographers and it improved my photos 300 percent within about the first 100 shots.

The camera maker specific forums here are also a good resource. Others will probably have your model or one similar, and can give you tips that apply directly to your camera.
This is a good place for more general questions.
