Default Comparable? 10x Optical & 4x Optical w/2.4x Telephoto Le

Hi!

Newbie question. I am looking for a 4mp camera that will not only
take regular pics (indoor shots, people, etc..) but one where I
can also take long shots (scenery, wildlife, etc...). I have been
reading reviews, and prices for the ultra zoom cameras but they
tend to be a bit pricey. The ones with lower optical seem to be
priced more to my liking (budget).

For example a 10x optical will run about $800.00 to $900.00 cdn.

A 4x optical, about $500.00 to $600.00, and a 2.4x telephoto lens
for it about $200.00. Savings of at least $100.00.

If I get a camera with a 4x optical zoom, and add a, say, 2.4
telephoto lens, will it be comparable to one with a 10x optical?

I know the math is close, but am I missing something?
I also know it depends on the camera, but lets say they both
have comprable lenses to start with.

Thanks,

James

Fuji s5000

SALE PRICE: 658.50 CDN

It's not 4mp, it's 3mp. But, this is very little difference in actual resolution. As a matter of fact, the c750 Olympus(4 MP) has about the same ACTUAL resolving ability as the S5000. More than a 'MP' rating is involved with a camera's actual resolving ability.

I concur with Chris on the S5000 as a very good compromise for your camera needs.

Default Thanks!

Sorry it took so long to respond. Have been checking out the S5000. Looks good. Found the S5000 portal too. So much to read. LOL!

Thanks again,

James (who will probably be back with more questions)
