Default which one to buy?

I am considering buying the Sony DSC F828, but am concerned about noise in ISO's >200. There are some good aspects to the camera though....not having to spend a lot in lenses is one.

However, the MOST important quality to me in a digital camera is image quality, so I am now considering the Nikon D100.

My question is this:

***I want a camera that will grow with me as I take my photography classes, has superb image quality, and that the body is around $1000, and that I can keep for many years without outgrowing.

Are there any all-in-ones that meet my image quality criteria, or do I need a DSLR?

I am considering the following cameras:

1. Sony DSC f828
2. Nikon Coolpix 5700
3. Nikon D100
4. Canon Digital Rebel (less options than the D100 though)

I know this is the worst question, but since this a major investment, one worth asking. Thanks for any input.

The best investment!! That is the $64,000 question. As new camera models hit the market every 6 months or so, we all wonder how wise are our long-term our investments.

I'm no expert, but my advice would be to 'invest' in a dSLR, especially one which accomodates external lens, such as the canon.

I whole heartedly agree with Janet.

If you haven't reviewed this site, I would suggest it: http://www.dpreview.com
You can also search out photographs taken by your camera of choice, here: http://www.pbase.com/cameras

If I could afford a dslr over the Sony or Nikon 5700, I'd definitely opt for a dslr! You'll have more growing room and better images from the start. That being my opinion.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the D100 doesn't come with a lens? If not, a considerable price difference between the D100 and digital rebel.
The other camera comparable in price to the D100 being the Canon 10d.

I certainly would like to make the jump over to dslr

Default Budget $1,000 or maybe double !??

The DRebel with kit lens will grow with you.
Who says you have to buy more glass?
A D100 or 10D with lens would be double the
price of the rest your considering!
