Use a tripod. You have to hold the camera steady for long exposures.

What do you mean by, "they did not turn out." Blurry? All dark? Noise?

What is the longest shutter speed your camera alows? Did you shoot at that speed? Did you use a tripod? Did you shoot at the largest aperature (lowest f/number) your camera alows?

Take a look at http://www.tawbaware.com/imgstack.htm for one night shot technique.

And don't forget your tripod.

Put the camera on a tripod or rest it where it will not move and doesnít have to be held.

Set the ISO to 50 for starters.

Switch to manual exposure and start with 8 seconds at f2.8 or the lowest you can get if you are zoomed.

Use the self timer to release the shutter so you donít shake the camera.

Since you have long exposure noise reduction go to 15 seconds if you need more light. If you still donít have enough light increase the ISO.

It is hard to come up with exact numbers as different light levels require different settings, but those will get you started.

I hope he doesn't mind, but Klaus DK has an article on his site regarding night photography.

Here is the link to his site - http://www.hertz-ladiges.com/eng/indexeng.html
