Default A good digicam for sending pics via email?

Hi. I am looking for a digicam under $300 (the cheaper the better). These are the things I am looking for:

- Can take good quality pics. The maximum resolution I will need is 1600x1200.
- I am not going to do any printing.
- Movie mode with sound.
- Has optical zooming ability
- Can take reasonably good indoor and night shots
- Compact or ultra compact size.
- (if possible) can be used as a webcam
- manual or auto controls...I don't really mind.

Being new to digital camera, I have been doing a lot of research on the net to find the best possible digicam for my needs. So far I have been thinking of getting one of these cameras: Pentax Optio S/S4, Sony P8/P72, Canon SD100, Kodak DX6440.

Initially I was thinking of the Canon SD100 but I have read that the pics it takes aren't so good. Well if you could tell me other models that will suit my needs or could give me any sort of advice, I would be grateful.

While not a "compact" camera, the Panasonic DMC-FZ1 would be a solid choice for your needs. 12X optical zoom, image-stabilization, Leica lens,....etc.. It still small enough to pick up and go.

For e-mail you don't need more than 1Mp. Although the resolution you've quoted would require a 2Mp camera. If you truly never want to print the pictures then this is more than enough for your needs. All the cameras you've mentioned are 3Mp or more so exceed your stated requirements.

you could try the Canon PowerShot A300
A200 will be cheaper, but it has no optical zoom
the A300 would have optical, but i forgot what multiplication.

its compact, and a fun and funky party camera.
it has been out for a while now so i'm guessing there'll be a huge price drop, given it is not discontinued.

Those are somewhat self contradictory requirements. To work well in low light, you need a big lens (small f/number). To have zoom, some space is needed for the bits to move about. The smaller you want the camera, the less room there is for the other two.
