Default Zoom lens sharpness ?

Question: At what focal length are most zoom lenses generally the sharpest ? For an example, a Nikon 55-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G VR AFS lens. Would this lens be sharper at the low end of it's zoom range (55mm), or somewhere in the middle or at the high end (300mm) ? Thanks.

It varies with the lens. That's why SLRGear.com is such a popular site. I should add that individual copies of a lens vary significantly, too. Here's a quick link to their interactive chart for the lens you asked about: http://slrgear.com/reviews/zproducts...6g/tloader.htm As you can see, this particular lens is best in the middle of its range. FWIW

In general, zoom lenses tend to be sharpest and have the least CA in the middle of their zoom range. This is not universal, however, and SLRGear.com and PhotoZone.de are very useful for objective test data on individual lenses.
