I'm rather fond of my A10 and think it's an excellent choice. I use my D7 for serious work but the A10 gathers no dust. It's a bit shy of pixels to print 8x10s but otherwise has always given me terrific results. I chose it because it uses compact flash memory and standard AA NiMH batteries (don't forget to include battereies and a charger). It may sound like overkill but I have a 256mb card in mine. It will store at least 360 fine quality 1.3mp images which is handy for times when you can't download every day.

IMHO if you want a gift the beginner can really learn photography with both choices are too automated.

WLS3,
The models listed are they because of recieptient age, budget for gift or trying to keep it simple?
