Default What is this?

I just got an Olympus SP-720UZ IHS. I think it was a great deal for $150 shipped with a free 8Gb eye-fi (which I'm now convinced is "magic").

Anyway, it had a loose "accessory" in the box. There is no mention of it in the quickstart guide or the manual. I have several other digital cameras including a decent DSLR & none have anything like this.

It is a plastic cylinder roughly 1.5" long & 1" in diameter. It is hinged and held closed by 2 small plastic tabs. It doesn't appear to be made to be repeatedly opened & closed because both the plastic hinges and closure tabs are very frail. Inside are some metal channels. It's heavier than it looks at 1.1 oz.

Any ideas?

Appears to be a ferrite core noise suppressor. These are often found on computer cables, such as the USB cable connecting camera to PC, or monitor cables.
No guesses as to why it was loose in your camera box.

That's what it is, I have one on the USB cable that I use to download from my camera to the computer. It goes as close to the camera plug in end as possible.

It does look like a noise suppressor, but I don't think it is. Note the two "nubs" in the middle, they create two channels when closed, suppressors have only one channel, those "nubs" would crush the cable. I have no idea what else it would be, but pretty sure it's not a noise suppressor.

BTW, for what it's worth, I don't think it matters which end it's on as I have two different cords with one at the camera end and one at the computer end.

That type is made to have the cable looped around the outside, so it passes through twice. Don't see them much anymore. Maybe the factory had a lot of extras and they decided to pack one with each camera to save on their landfill costs.

Ive had a few of these and had no idea what they were.
Do they have magnets in them?
Does it lessen the "noise" a charger makes when plugged in?
