Default Sony HX200V- Slow to capture image

It seems to take forever for camera to get quick image of my new grandchild. There seems to be a delay between when I press button until it takes photo. I might have purchased the wrong camera for this. Maybe I should get the NEX 5r or some other quicker cameras. Any ideas?

I always miss the smile.

Certain exposure and autofocus modes increase the lag time between when you fully depress the shutter and when the camera takes the photo. I've noticed that the Intelligent Auto can be particularly slow. Have you tried varying the settings?

Many newer cameras have face detection and smile detection settings. Is yours one of these? It may be just a matter of setting the camera to use the feature.
Often, when using Intelligent Auto mode (or what it's called for your model), the camera takes an extra bit of time deciding which settings to use. If you have preset the features you want, it should be faster.
