Hi,

I am new here and was wondering if someone could help me out. I have a canon sd10, 4MP with no optical zoom. I love the camera but I find myself needing a zoom when I take pictures of animals in a local nature preserve. When I use the digital zoom the image gets pretty fuzzy. Would it make any sense to buy a 3MP camera with a 6X or more optical zoom? I would love a 5 or 6 MP with zoom but they are too expensive for me right now. Would I be able to get better close-up shots with a 3MP and good zoom or would it be the same as my 4MP and then digital zooming or cropping the image?

Thanks so much!

Glen

For telephoto shots you would do much better with the 3Mp camera and 6X zoom. Using 2X digital zoom takes your current camera from 4 to 1Mp – same if you cropped. 6X would take you to the realm of a toy camera as far as Mp. The 3Mp camera with a 6X optical zoom is still 3Mp at 6X zoom.

The 6X optical zoom is a good zoom for a telephoto because you usually do not have to worry about camera shake. My son has the Fuji S5000 with 10X zoom and it is a nice camera. You can find it on ebay for around $300 or less.

I would also choose the 3meg with 6x zoom.

Zoom is a bad habit, but it's so much fun...
