Hello Cordis,

you can have a look at the special Oly forums here at Steves Forums. There's a post with the URL... hm wait, I'll look for you... brb.

http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...mp;forum_id=22

--> There - pretty nice movie.

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php

--> has a lot of reviews.

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/ol..._770uz-review/

--> complete review with sample movies

Can't recall the model here at work- it's a all-in-one combo (DVD player, Receiver and stuff, not the most recent model... and doesn't play a lot of different file types (i.e. no Kodak picture CD, no file/directory browsing for JPEG's)

TMPGEnc can crop the image for you - I dont see any black rectangles - be aware that you loose a bit from your image if you do so.

If SVCD doesn't play - try regular VCD. Of if you own a DVD burner - make a DVD

I can't comment on the picture quality of the Oly yet, but all reviews said it was a good performer in daylight and had some weaknesses with AF in dim light. Quality should be good till ISO 200 or so, I expect simular results as with the Canon. I am sure I'll miss the IS though - get a sharp picture at full optical+digital zoom at 1/60 was impressive (ok - I needed 4 attempts, but it can be done) Optical Zoom (10x) was safe for me for 1/15..1/20 or faster shots - thats just great.

Since I have a analog SLR I am used to carry a tripod (small "inflatable" one) with me, so no big fuss about it really.

The thing I will REALLY miss on the oly is the movable TFT screen. Imagine a long shutter shot (10 secs). You put the cam on the table and want totarget whatever you want a picture from. With a movable TFT easy. Without ...

Oh well ... you can't get everything.

DON'T FORGET to tell me what you bought... I am still looking for a good offer... cameras sell cheaper in the United States I found complete set ordered via internet would be around 480 EURO plus 50 EURO shipping (cam + 512 MB XD), cheapest cam+128MB XD is 549 EURO with german shop ... hm. But I guess I'll buy here - warranty and service is a important thing :!:

Regards.

thkn777where are you from? german? well here in brazil prices are a lot higher. well if i have time i probably would wait for the pentax optio mx, it seems very good. have you seen the JVC GR-D200 its a camcorder that uses SD MemoryCardrecords in mpeg4 take pictures 1,9mpixels 1600 x 1200if i didnt get a camera maybe i get one of this but i prefer a camera. you told me to burn in vcd, well i am afraid it wont look ok on tv, and if it was ok why get a 640 x 480 camera if vcd reaches only 320 x something if i am not wrong.

hey ed33 if you get some news about the pentax put it here, thanks

To burn VCD was only so you can see if it works in general and how.

Yes, I am from Germany. Got the price down to around 540,- EURO (about $654) for the 770UZ plus a 128MB XD-card and am afraid it won't get any deeper. I was hoping for 4xx EURO but it's not that bad I'd say.

What a pity prices in Brasil are much higher... can't understand it ... would have expected otherwise, really??

The Pentax MX is nothing for me in the field of ergonomics - I want a cam to take photos and SOME movies The MX looks more like it is focussed on movies.

Regards

i have some relatives in germany my middle name is BLANK my cousins lives in frankfurt and Mengen(im not sure its written correctly, its a small city)

you said $654 for the 770UZwith a 128MB XD-card??

here in a regular shop price is US$870 WITHOUT 128Mb xd card (US$70)

in a site like ebay sometimes with no guarantee, maybe a refurbished one US$650 WITHOUT 128Mb xd card

The Pentax MX i havent found a review i think it is not for sale yet, but the pentax and the oly have chance, but the price will make difference

Lived in Heidelberg twice: 1976 - 1979 and 1983 - 1986. Was working for the Army (civil service) at that time.Thoroughly enjoyed both tours.

Hey, cordis, I would just buy a digital camcorder. You will, obviously, get MUCH better image quality and sound quality, but also, you can geta good one for less than $500 USD now. I would look as Sony or Canon if you decide to take that route.

Good luck!

I'm going to choose between the pantax and the nikon coolpix 3700 which has a good movie mode 640 x 480 (30 fps) and is very compact but has not much zoom...

We'll wait and see....

Hey Cordis,

found this one: http://shop.mediamarkt.de/webapp/wcs...tegoryId=10014

496,- EURO ($603 or so) + shipping (but maybe your relatives can help)

I am not sure what the guarantee is like if you buy in Germany though.

http://www.shopping.com/xPC-Olympus_C_770~S-2~OR-0~PG-1

==> shopping.com lists from $425 with 1st trusted shop at $458!!! (makes me cry :O) but I guess shipping and warranty will kill the fun. It's with a 16 or 32 MB XD chip too.

I'll try to talk a local Olympus certified dealer into 54? EURO with a 128MB XD card - nothing better than bring your "baby" to a specialist if it won't work...

Ed33 - why not take a glimpse at the Nikon 4200 or 5200 then? I find the ergonomics of the 3700 really bad - but thats just me. My personal favourite would be the 4200. The 15fps are enough, 640x480 is great. Ton's of features. I was tempted to try the little beauty - but not available in stores yet here...

Thanks for your help. I've looked into the 4200 (and the 4100 which is new too and I cant really see much difference:?) but the pic quality is not as good 'they say'. It's really hard to choosebetween so many similar products...

When willone see a difference between 15 and 30 fps? I would like to write the movies directly from the memory card to a cd. will that work and will I be able to watch the movies directly from the cd on my computer?

I hope the revieuw on the pentax will be good so that will solve alot... I just hope its not too heavy as thats quiet important for me.

Thanks again!
Ed

Ed - I tested the Canon S1 IS (15fps+30fpd) and the Fuji F700 (30fps) and found that I enjoyed the 640x480 at 15 fps mode most. Good balance of quality and memory usage.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"AVI movies can be transformed into VCD/SVCD format using TMPGEnc with really good quality.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"My wife loved the 10x Zoom of the Canon but I didn't liked the bad AF of the Canon in dim light - so we go for a Olympus 770 now.
  • style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"10x zoom[/*]
  • style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"4mp[/*]
  • style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"picture quality is good (according to the Oly fans and the reviews at least)[/*]
  • style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"AF in dim light is better then the Canon S1 IS[/*]
  • style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"movie up to 640x480 at 30fps in MPEG-4 and 15 fps AVI
[/*]
style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"Downside: 512 MB XD card max.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"But I already said that in previous post.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"Important for me was the ergonomics - I spent some hours holding virtually each digicam, pressing the buttons, trying to focus and to do some basic things (program mode, taking pictures, choosing aperture/shutter speed, AF/MF, zoom etc.)

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"Most cameras don't fit into my hands... especially because buttons are too tiny. So the C-770 is a model where most things match.
