Default Monitor Gamma vs Actual tone

New to digital and need a little help to understand actual image tone Vs what may be output on my monitor. I have some great pics from my Dimage 7i that look good on my monitor. However if I adjust my monitor Gamma via a program like Photo Impact etc the result is not as good in terms of the tonal range. How can I tell if my image is correct for printing?
