Default gemstone pic - need help!

Hi all,

I need to take close-up picture of gemstones.
My digital is the Nikon 4500 and I have bought a "Digital Optics 0.45 pro High Defintion with Macro".

So, my concern isn't the macro but rather the LIGHTING and the way to do it. What artificial light do I need? Do I need to take pics with the light coming from above? in which case, where do I display the camera, side by side with the light?
Basically what is the best way to take a nice gem pic from above - showing the play of light in the gem ? see attachment

Thank for your help, I am a novice!

The only thing that springs to my mind is an LED ring light. I don't know if it'll work or where you buy them but they are available. Perhaps someone else knows.

Default Saw this in a Magazine

Here is a product who's sole purpose is to allow great lighting of small objects.

http://www.clouddome.com

Since I don't do any macro photography I don't know how well it works, but eDigitalPhoto magazine praised it and it seems simple enough to work well.

I hope this helps.

Dear samplejs,

Thanks a lot for your tip. It might just be that cloudome is exactly what I am looking for!

Cheers!
