Default Good starter DigCam for Newbie - What about Canon A200?

have been amateur film photog for long time. want to get into dig. looked at A200 and liked. what else should look at for similar capabilities and $$??? thanks for the help!!!

Also - for general 'family' photography, trips, etc. how important is optical zoom? Thanks!!

Look at an Olympus D510 or D520. They both have 3X optical zoom and should be near the same price range. Plus or minus $50.

look at a dimage F100 too. or S404.

how important is optical zoom for 'family' photography? trips, vacations, Christmas, etc?
