Default Coolpix 4300, consumer advice?

Hi, I'm new here.8)

I'm planning to buy a Digital camera, around the 4 mega pixel mark. I read the review on this site for the Nikon Coolpix 4300 and that looks quite good. I want a camera that is for frequent use and will provide proffesional portrait shots of people, is this camera good for this? They will be mainly outdoor portraits, and I understand this camera has good presets, and manual control as well. Any owners care to comment? At the same time I like it's size and portability.

If not, what other cameras would people suggest for getting good portrait shots? I don't really want to go as far as a Digi SLR camera since It wouldn't get all the use for the cost of it. Or do I really need to get one for good portraits?

Any thoughts and help would be greatly apreiciated.

Thanks
Dave

What I think is important when you need shooting portraits, is a long zoom. For portrait I would consider a digicam with at least a 100mm zoom (equal to 35mm). In old days portraitphotographers used a 50mm, but nowadays every serious photographer seems to go over 100mm. It altso gives you better DOF control.
I also would consider a digicam with natural colors - I'd choose a Nikon for that.

Good luck on you quest.

Great thanks, so I'll have a look at some of the Nikon range. A x3 zoom probably isn't enough for good portraits.

The Olympus C4040 3X optical lens is rated at 105mm. Read Steve's review of the camera. The camera works excellent for me.

Just remember that it's not the ciffers itself that makes the zoom.

3x zoom can be a longer zoon than 4x zoom! (Maybe you know!)

You have to calculate the zoom range.

Take the specifications for the digicam i.e 12-50mm and multiply with the zoomfaktor. This would mean a 36 - 150mm zoom (35mm)
Take another digicam i.e a 4x zoom at 8 - 35mm, this will give you a zoomrange at 32 - 140mm.

This mean that 4x zoom is smaller than 3x zoom. Many people is not aware of this. So you have to calculate a little bit.

So you schoolmoney wasn't wasted then...huh.

And for last: forget all about digitalzoom - it's just a gimmick!

Ok so what Camera do you think is best between the Nikon 4300 and the Olympus C-4000 ?

Similar specs although I've heard the olympus is quite slow in it's operation.

Thoughts?

I prefer the look of the Nikon 4300 but that shouldn't really be a factor in my decision I suppose.

Thanks!

Brand loyalty is worth nothing...but all I can say is that all my Nikon has been great cameras. Not without some features missing though!
