I just purchased a Canon a510. Tbis is my first digital camera.

I thoght that one of the great things about digital photography was that you could see how the image came out by looking at it in the LCD viewfinder right after the photo was taken.

The problem is that the image looks fantastic in the LCD viewfinder after I take the picture, but when I download it to the computer, it looks dark.

So what I am learning it that when the image looks washed out in the LCD viewfinder, it will probably look great when I download it to the computer.

I have a feeling that this is a common problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks you!

What's happening is that your LCD brightness is set too high. Therefore images that are dark look ok on the LCD and images that are fine are washed out. Try going into the setup menu and turning down the brightness on the LCD.

You shouldn't trust the LCD to tell you how your pictures look either. There is a graph called a histogram that shows the amount of brightness from black to white, and only that will tell you whether the picture is really too dark or washed out.

You can find out more about histograms here:

Yes, this is a common issue. If you angle your camera in different directions, you will notice the image on the LCD changes as well. Just the nature of the beast.

You can also try calibrating the colors on your monitor. This will help with getting more "correct" colors on your screen. Calibrating your monitor is very helpful when it comes time to getting prints made.
