Default New choices....Olympus D-550 & Canon Powershot S-30

I'm back. I hope you all aren't sick of dispensing advice to the same newbies over and over!

I returned the Kodak DX 3900. I wasn't pleased with the image quality. And forget it if your subject was moving (and my main subject isn't 23 months old so he's in constant motion). That leaves the Sony DSC P-71 which I'm just still not convinced about.

I looked at the Pentax Optio 330 but got scared off by some not so friendly reviews. Now I'm doing as much research as I can about the Canon Powershot S-30 (that one of you recommended) and my old standby choice, the Olympus D-550. I have not been able to use either of those yet.

Have any of you used both of them that could tell me which gives a better image quality. By that , I newbiely mean, not grainy, sharper, no over-the-top colors. I've looked at the images on the websites of both cameras and it's hard for me to judge.

Again, I'll be using the camera mainly as point-and-shoot until I get the hang of all the functions. I'll be taking family pictures, mainly of my son. This camera will replace my 35mm so I want as good of an image print that 3mp will buy me so I can use these pictures for our photo albums and to frame.
