Just got my first digital slr...a digital rebel. I found out this weekend that I need more lense in order to photograph my 6 year olds soccer games....would this lense be acceptable in pulling the action in closer?

If not do any of you have any suggestions?

Tks in advance

I use a canon 100-300 usm lens, this lens has the same focal distance, Ive used it for sports with good results.

The reach of the lense will be good. But, 5.6 is really slow. If the soccer games are always in bright sunny weather where you're at then it won't be a problem (you really want 1/500 or better shutter speeds). If overcast then you won't get the shutter speeds you need. Now, in reality 6 year olds aren't going to move that fast so you could get by with 5.6 for now. Realize, however, if you want to do sports down the road you will likely need another lense. Also, if your daughter gets involved in indoor sports, 2.8 is the slowest you will want. But any lense that's faster than 5.6 is going to cost significantly more than the lense you're looking at so that is a real investment - IMO not worth it if the only use is for a 6 year old's soccer games.

I can't comment on that specific lense' performance though. Hope this was somewhat helpful!

I agree with JohnG, 5.6 wont cut it for sports.
