Yeah but 99% of digicams have a 38mm wide angle, it's infuriating. Really drove me batty.
The Dimage7 is the one of the 1% with a 28mm... Remember, you can always zoom in by cropping, but you can not re-create what's not captured in the 1st place!

A wide angle is also harder to design since the lens is designed to pull in picture all the way from the edge of the lens without distortion (also by bending the light more) whereas a longer zoom is facilitated by using a smaller CCD... using the center part of the lens mostly.

Yeah I know about that blasted Minolta. Just my luck. Firstly, it’s wayyy too big. Secondly, between myself and my girlfriend we have gone through three different model minolta’s and ALL HAD THE LENS GET STUCK, it refused t come out and zoom. Minolta refused to repair under warrenty.

Hence, NO MINOLTA.

Think I’m bitter?? hehehehe

If it's any comfort that Minolta has a manual zoom that you can "unSTUCK" yourself

... and you'll need that big APO lens to pull in a CA free wider angle! 8)

You can have the best of both worlds-- a long zoom and wide angle, if you don't mind adding a good quality wide angle lens. I added a WCON-08E .8x teleconverter to my camera, allowing me to take sharp, clear, undistorted pictures at about 30mm.
