Hello all.¬* I know, I know....my DiMage z5 has no focus assist lamp.¬* I knew it when I bought it, but the price was too good to pass up.¬* So now, how do I compensate for not having the focus assist lamp when taking low light pictures (w/o of course¬* turning a light on or just not taking the picture at all and committing the scene to memory)?TIA

You can get a laser pointer that projects patterns instead of just a dot, and point it at the subject before taking a picture. That will give the camera something to focus on.

..and maybe you can try zooming in on the subject you want to get into focus, then do a manual focusing, then zoom out again. This works with my Nikon 8800.

berkant_atay,So let me get this straight.¬* Put the camera into manual focus.¬* Zoom in.¬* Focus it when it's zoomed in.¬* Then zoom back out?¬* I'll try that right now.

A simple approach is to find something the same distance with better light and contrast. Pre-focus on that. For a flash shot I don't find the difference in ambient light makes an appreciable difference in the photo.
