Default Snapshots from snappy cameras

I've grown used to SLRs over the years and the one digicam difference that I just can't get over is the lagtime between when I hit the shutter release and when the camera records the picture.

When I shell out my $500 or whatever a camera costs these days, I want to be able to record a momentary facial emotion, a singular sports moment, or any other MTV attention-length photo op.

What cameras should I look at?

Many thanks,
Joshua

PS I'd really appreciate it if this detail was listed in the specs. It's pretty important, isn't it?

Joshua

If you select a digital camera with manual settings you can obtain your snappy shots. The shutter lag is a result of the auto mode that adust the camera settings before taking the shot.

Joshua... To add to Gibs's point, if the cam has any sort of movie mode, it must do what you want since it's shooting at 10-30 frames per second.

That's why in a still cams' movie mode, the first frame taken, determines the focus/white balance/ exposure settings for the rest, and the zoom controls are disabled! If you do this manually you get the same speed of response, although resolution is lower in movie, which makes delay to shoot next pic less.

The time needed to be able to take the next shot (not quite what you asked) depends on file size setting options, speed of writing to card and cam's internal memory size. Don't forget flash re-charge time can slow things up a lot.

Ah, now that makes sense.

Thanks for the help, gentlemen.
