My camera (Fuji S9500) is not supported for RAW in the photo manipulation softwares at the moment and so I have been changing them from RAW to TIFF using finepix and then opening them as a TIFF in Gimp.

What do I lose or gain - if anything?

Thanx,

Ben.

Assuming the RAW converter that Gimp eventually gets is not better than the one in the Fuji software... you are loosing nothing.

Thanx for the response eric, I guess what I'm looking for is the difference of image quality between a RAW image and a TIFF?

There should be no difference in image quality. The advantage to RAW is the ability toadjust things such as the white balance and adjust the exposure in post processing. I assume theFinepix software allows you to do this. Once you have done this you cannot save the image back as RAW you have to convert it to another format and TIFF is probably the best to use.

Think of the RAW file as your digital negative. Everything else is a print. I think of incamera JPG's as polariods!!!

The RawConverter LE software that ships with Fuji cameras ONLY converts RAW to TIFF, it DOES NOT EDIT RAW in any way. If you want to do that, Fuji wants you to buy THEIR software, which will not work with RAW files from any other cameras.

The following link is to a page on Photo-Freeware.net where you can download a comprehensive freeRAWeditingtool that doesn't seem to care what the extension is.

UFraw is ena excellent program that loads and manipulates RAW images to Gimp.
It supports many cameras among which is Fuji digital cameras. I use the windows version with Gimp v2.2 and it works fine.
Home page for the program is http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/

Regards,
Viron.
