Yes.

You need a DVD burner and some software (usually sold with the DVD burner) to back up files to DVD.

DVD's hold over 4 gigabytes of info, whereas CD's hold up to 800mb's, depending on the CD's you buy.

So, DVD's will hold over five times the amount of a CD.

Just thought I'd add that the quality of the DVD matters. They will all work, but some will last longer than others.

I don't know any good resources for DVD information, but this site was very good for CD-Rom information:
http://www.cdrfaq.org/

And I believe there is overlap between the media in technology (how they are made) but not as much in how the data is stored.

normaly when u buy a dvd writer u get nero burning rom with it

just make a data disks and drag and drop your folders of pics onto it and they are archived, if you dont want to add more later and make it fully compliant trun of multisession and close the disk, this will ensure its readable by the most things

i recomend any ritek die media as it is by far the best

if u want to make slide shows etc to music u will need a bit more specialised software, what will make transisiton effects between the pictures and sync them to a song of choice

make sure to look after the disk as scratches may result in data not reading

I backup ALL my photos (unedited) first on cd... then I compile, edit and save on cd..

About once every 3 months or so, I sit down for a few hours and combine video, photos and various other clips together and finish them off onto dvds for sharing purposes.
