Default HELP with my NIkon 990, PLZ!!

It all started with the 990 not retaining the date and time after a battery change.
I kept fresh alkalines in it overnite to charge the internal battery just like the manual
states without success.
So, I thought I would try a firmware upgrade but I have run into problems
again! I went to the Nikon site and found a program called "Updater" is
needed to transfer the firmware via USB.
Nikon, in their supreme wisdom has only posted updates to the "Updater"!!!
NOT the full version!!! That makes a lot of sense!!!!

Is there any way to flash the firmware from the CF card like the 950?
I couldn't find any instruction to that affect for the 990.
Or do you know where I can get the full version of this "Updater"?
Or, to get back to my original problem, the internal battery bad and needs
changing, if so, is it possible to replace it myself?

Thanks for listening and any help!!

Instructions can be found in my Nikon 990 review here:

I do it all the time with Coolpix cameras, works great!

I doubt this is your problem though, the firmware has nothing to do with the date/time not being retained. Coolpix cameras use an internal capacitor to retain memory for short periods during battery changes and unfortunately they do go bad and cannot be replaced by the user - only by Nikon service.
