Most viewing programs will auto-resize images larger than the computer screen to fit the screen. So they will look the same on the screen. The difference is when you go to print larger size prints you want to use larger size images. Here's a simplified print chart based on image sizes:

640x480 - only good for screen use
sub 1 megapixel (1024x768) 4x6"
1-megapixel (1280x960) 4x6"
2 megapixel (1600x1200) 5x7"
3 megapixel (2048x1536) 8x10"
4 megapixel (2272x1704) 11x14"
5 megapixel (2560x1920) 13x19"

This is not an absolute, just a reference. I have made perfectly good 8x10" prints from 1600x1200 images and I've made some good wall-sized 13x19" prints from 2048x1536 images ... it just all depends on how good the original image is.
