Look into the Nikon Coolpix cameras. They have the best macro in the business!

I second that. No matter what strengths or weakness you may hear about Nikon, almost every review I read states they have excellent macro abilities.

The following are four links that compares the close-up capability of Nikon Coolpix 4500, 5000 and 5700 along with some macro techniques:

4500: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=4936523

4500 with teleconverters: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=4940566

5000: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=4952742

5700: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=4967574

Based on your need, you could choose one of them.

I thoroughly recommend the CP4500 in that role. It will focus down to 0.8" - with a degree of optical zoom.
