Default Newbie question.. optical & digital zoom?

I looked at the review for the Fuji FinePix 2800 and it says it has a 6x zoom. On the Jessops camera store website however (www.jessops.co.uk) I got this info:

The FinePix 2800 Zoom comes equipped with an extremely versatile high-performance Fujinon optical zoom lens that delivers the equivalent of a 38 228mm range on a 35mm camera. Precise auto-focus system assures sharp, focused images in an instant. The optical range can be extended with a digital zoom to give a total magnification of up to 15x (38 570mm).

Does this camera have a maximum of x15? what is the difference between optical and digital zoom?

Default Optical versus digital zoom...

Hi Dan,
Optical zoom is simply the focal length range of the camera.

Digital zoom is an electronic "crop" and interpolation back to full pixel resolution. Digital zoom is simply doing in firmware (the programming built into the camera) exactly what you could do in software like PhotoShop after you have taken the picture by selecting the centermost portion and discarding the rest, then resampling to get back to the original pixel dimensions.

Digital zoom, for the most part, is only useful if there are sufficient pixels to properly define the boundaries of fine detail before interpolation (creating pixels by analyzing adjacent pixels to approximate what a sensor with higher resolution - more photo sites - might have "seen" had the camera had a higher resolution sensor when the image was captured).

Don't count on digital zoom to do too much for you in the majority of cases.

Best regards,

Lin

The Fuji with its 6X is a great digicam. Figure out if that will be enough for you. If you are going to need more, get it with the cam, add on lenes tend to cost more than this cam if they are avialable aftermarket. MOST PEOPLE THAT DO NOT DO ALOT OF WILDLIFE OR SPORTS LIKE SURFING< SKIING ARE SATIFIED WITH THREE X OPTICAL>(SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS got to get a new kvm switch)

Thanks for your help Lin and Gary

Would 6x would be enough for football matches (say to get closer action shots from 20 or 30 yards?).

Default It might be....

It might be enough - at 228mm but since you only have a couple megapixels to work with, it would be best to get a close as possible since cropping possibilities are limited.

If you haven't yet purchased the camera, and are considering it for sports use, I would maybe reconsider another model because there doesn't seem to be any way to attach a tele converter to the 2800 and your use may require that. The S602 might make a better candidate as would the Olympus C2100UZ or E100-RS because of their 10X stabilized zoom.
