Default How many megapixels would you buy?

Check this out. Some of us may have thought the megapixel race was over.

I would think you'd need some pretty good optics to be able to read the lettering on an airplane from 18KM, as well as a high resolution sensor.

It's difficult to imagine the cost of the sensor, let alone the cost of a lens sharp enough to resolve an image well enough to feed this beast with detail.

According to that article, it took 8 years for Canon to bring to market it's 50MP sensor, and from that, extrapolated that it would take another 8 years for their 250MP sensor to show up in a commercial product. I doubt the science of optics will progress as quickly, which reduces this advance in sensor technology to an intellectual exercise.

Gosh! How many megapixels could you need? Here's another article related to it: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/c...obably-wont-h/

That five year old article's headline claims that 120MP senors probably won't make it to a DSLR "in your lifetime". Since there are already 50MP sensors available, it seems the author was a bit on the pessimistic side.
