I have a Nikon Coolpix 995. When I connect it to the comp. to download pics the camera is unresponsive. The cable looks in bad shape but when I push the connectorin and hold it with my hand the connection is established. This might indicate that the connector inside the camera is loose.

Is it easy to open up the camera myself the check what the problem is or should I leave it to the professionals?

I'd suggest you buy a USB 2.0 card reader. You'll get much faster transfer times using one versus trying to use a USB connection with the camera anyway. A card reader will appear just like any other disk drive when plugged in. So, you can copy your photos from the folder on the card that contains them.

One like Steve mentioned in this post would probably be a good idea, since it handles most commonly used card types (including CompactFlash):;forum_id=52

If you want to get one that only works with CompactFlash, they're even less money.

You can even buy multi-card readers for under $10 now online.

Here are some examples of card readers that support CompactFlash at

Card Readers at that support CompactFlash media

I personally prefer the ones that use a longer USB cable and sit on your desk (some readers are designed to plug directly into a USB port).
