Salutations, gentlefolk !

Looking for digital camera, especially for extremo close-ups, macromode. Reviews of Nikon 4500 seemed to indicate that it was close match to my needs.

OK,I assume that Nikon's produced something newer and better in two years since, but figuring out the numbering systemfor their products has me bewildered.

Adivce earnestly sought. Thanks very much for any help you can give me.

Yours, John Desmond

Yes the Coolpix 4500 is an excellent macro closeup camera, as are most all of the Coolpix camera line. Nikon has unfortunately decided to abandon the swiveling body design that made them famous with the Coolpix 900, 950, 990, 995, 4500 series of cameras. If you do a lot of macro shots on a tripod the swiveling body/lens cameras were excellent because you could tilt the lens as needed and still keep the LCD facing you.

The newer Coolpix 2200, 3200, 4100, 4200, 5200 models and of course the more expensive higher-end Coolpix 5400, 5700, 8700 and new 8400 and 8800 cameras are all excellent macro performers. It just depends on your budget and resolution needs as to which one to get. The higher-end Coolpix cameras do have tilt and swivel LCD monitors which make macro+tripod shots easier.
