Default Nikon D400?

Can anybody shed ANY light on the next Nikon century series camera. My D300 is getting very long in the tooth, and it is really tedious getting outshot by those 7D folks. Is there any news as to when Nikon will get back into the battle?

(but for the record, if the next camera uses the same 16mp sensor found in the D7000, it looks like I'll be listing my camera and lenses, and jumping to the dark side. So I hope someone has news, and that it is good news.)

Not to answer your question but it looks to me like every make has the "advanced amateurs" dis-satisfied. canon for releasing all these entry-level models. sony for the same thing. nikon for being slow to upgrade it's higher end. we sure expect a lot for our money.

How is your D300 no longer meeting your creative needs? Has it stopped taking photos? You must have a big budget for photography if you can afford to dump your Nikon equipment and switch to another system!

My D300 "stopped taking photos" when the D3 came out.
The only thing better is the FullFrame D3s.

But the D7000 does really well in a cheaper, lighter and smaller package.
If/when the D400 comes out, it should be better yet in a DX camera of 16-24mp.

The next batch of Canon DSLRs is also overdue, but after owning a nonAFn 5D2, I won't be going there again.
