The life of the original battery is really bad. I know I can expand it by not watching the LCD, and so on... But still... Is the D300 battery compatible and is it better ?

I thought they used the same battery? Does the D200 use the black one or the gray? I have 3 gray ones that I used with my D80 and they all work great on my D300. I have never complained about the battery life. Maybe you just need a new one. What does you battery life metter on the camera say? Mine all still say "new" ant they are a couple of years old.

The D200 and D300 use the same battery...EN-EL3e. The D300 has just been tweaked a bit to get more out of the battery. Battery life is one of the main complaints about the D200. I wouldn't think any of the 3rd party batteries out there would be any better. Still, two batteries should get you at least a full days worth of shooting.

You may also get slightly better life with rechargeable AA's in the optional battery grip.
