I've owned a number of digital cameras, the last before my D2x was the D1x. When applying USM, while flexible to match the image, I can give you the following rough numbers:
(This is for full sized images, not those for the WEB) A radius of one to two, and an amount between 85 and 125. With the Dix this produced great results, with little additional noise. With the D2x the results are horrible using the above. artifacts, objectionable noise, ghastly results. Without really knowing what I'm doing  I tried some numbers that gave lousy results on the D1x: A radius of 8 to 16, and an amount of 20 to 40. This produced wonderful results, almost no noise. Works great! Why this is so, I have no idea. Dave |
