Hi, I own a D50 and use it mostly with a Sigma 18-125. I noticed that some photos in portrait orientation (vertical) don't rotate and appear on the LCD in landscape orientation. Most of the time these are photos taken at close range (telephoto). Example here. Is there a malfunction here or just a glitch in the machine? Thanks. Germain

There is a sensor in the D50 body that detects when the camera is held in portrait mode.

Looking at the example you've provided you seem to be looking down at your subject.

It may be that the angle you are holding the camera at is insufficient for the sensor to detect the orientation. If the camera is held at a right angle to the gound does it work reliably to change the display to portrait? If not there may be a fault with the sensor.
