Onboard flash will only be good to 20ft. max at night. I've had to deal with poorly lit stadiums and flash as only option. I have the SB800, although there may be cheaper alternatives than Nikon flashes.

I was thinking about a large external flashes like the Nikon SB-800 or SB-900 flashes.

Second game of the year...Junior Varsity. One hour earlier start time which gave me alot more shooting light throught the game. However, the last quarter started getting pretty dark as it was over cast.

When shooting at 1/80s and ISO 1250 aperture was at F4.2 and this took pretty decent pictures. I played with the ISO as it got darker and shot in sports mode the whole time. I'm happy with what I'm getting for now.

Thursday he'll run in a freshman game which starts another half hour earlier yet. His playing time will double and this will allow for alot more shots in better light.

Now I know about what to save up for for those last two years of high school ball!!
