Hi all, I am new to dslr photography.
I have the D90 and my only lens is a Sigma 50-200. I am looking to get a single lens that I can really learn how to use the camera. And I will be going to Scotland soon so I want something wide to handle the landscape shots, but also be able to zoom in. I was thinking Nikon 18-200. I was also recommended the 35, but it's sold out everywhere for now. I have read that the 35 1.8 is for cropped sensor cameras, would it still work well on the D90? Advice please. Thanks |

Hello. The Nikon 35mm 1.8 is a DX lens and can work with any Nikon digital dSLR. The D90 is a crop sensor camera so the lens would be a great match in that respect. Being that you already have a lens with some reach with the Sigma 50-200mm you should look for the kit lens the 18-55mm. There are two versions, one with VR and one without. Shooting landscapes you won't truly need a fast lens so it would be a good purchase. Also, if you choose to shoot with your flash the size of that lens won't have a shadow problem at the bottom of the lens as you would with any 18-200mm lens. I have the 18-200mm Nikon and it is a decent lens but you would do better by yourself in terms of economics getting the 18-55mm.
You could get a myriad of other lenses but this is what I would do based on what you shared for your needs. |

Depends really on your budget. I'll list a few of the cheaper to mid range prices lenses that could satisfy your needs.

If I were in your moccasins, I would invest in a Nikon 18-55. On the 90's cropped sensor you will have a 27-82mm. The Tamron 18-270 would serve your needs alone, but the cost is a bit more, but then again not everyone can go to Ireland every other week either. Be sure to post pics when you get back.

The Nikon 16-85 is a fantastic walkabout lens for travel. Enjoy Scotland and please post your shots on the forum.

The 35/1.8 is a nice lens, but it wouldn't be much good for shooting landscape. It's got an angle of view of only about 38° on the D90.
As for the Nikon 18-200, it's not any better than the Sigma 55-200 you already have. Neither are any of the other superzoom lenses, for that matter. I think the Nikon 16-85 would be the best choice.

Back to the 18-55mm. It is very inexpensive and a decent lens that will cover the needs posted by the OP. I did mention before that there is a myriad of other lenses but for simplicity and affordability it is a logical choice. Just my 2 cents is all.

I really like the 18-105 mm lens on my D90. It's a reasonably sharp lens and quite versatile. Someone mentioned that the 35 mm isn't very good for landscapes. I have taken a couple of panorama images with that lens that have turned out quite satisfactorily in my opinion. But I think the 18-105 mm is the most versatile "learning" lens if you are not severely limited on funds. Otherwise the 18-55 is a good complimentary choice to what you already have.

I use a Tamron 18-270 VC II lenson my D90 as my travel option...light weight, versatile and good image quality. Oh...and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either!
