I see a spotting problem on my lens on my D70. At either 18 mm or 70 mm, I see a few black dots and a fuzzy looking fiber-like defect after uploading to my camera. At either setting, the defects are the same size and in the same location on the images. Here's a sample.
Any suggestions about cleaning would be appreciated. Should the camera be sent out for a complete cleaning or could it be done locally? I live in Richmond, Virginia. Thanks for your help. |

Are they equally sharp regardless of the aperture? That would indicate that the dust is on the sensor, not in the lens.
For sensor cleaning, you shoull look at Copper Hill Images.

They were shot at f13. Do you suggest some test shots at max and min aperture? I'll do that tomorrow and re-examine.
If all shots are fuzzy (unfocused) might it be in/on the lens itself? I was switching between this lens and my tele recently. Thanks! |

Anything in or on the lens is not likely to be very sharp except at very small apertures. Anything on the image sensor will be sharp whatever the aperture.

I've had to clean the sensor on my DSLR's a few times and have done it myself. There are a number of resources on the internet that recommend tools and instructions. I've used this resource with excellent results.http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/

Blobs in bright areas when shooting with small apertures like f/13 or smaller have been dust on the sensor in my experience with a D70s. I use an Arctic Butterfly http://visibledust.com/products3.php?pid=707 to clean it up.

Everyone:
Thanks for all the great suggestions and warnings. I bought the camera when it first came out and have never cleaned the sensor. Further research indicates this may be the problem. I will start with a good blower and work my way up. |
