I've owned both the 55-200mm & (currently) the 70-300mm VR and liked both.
I sold the 55-200mm to get the 70-300mm VR.

However, for what your using it for, the 55-200mm would be your best bet.

Multiple lenses of less ambitious zoom ranges will give you higher quality images than a jack-of-all-trades-and-master-of-none lens will. The convenience of not having to change lenses comes at a price.
