Somehow, I lost the rubber eye cup on my D50. I have found some original replacements for about $9 shipped. I have also seen some other 3rd party type replacements for about the same cost. But the 3rd party ones extend out farther. Is there any benefit to larger eye cup?

So far, I have not really missed having the eye cup on. It may have been gone for some time.

The eyecup serves mostly to keep from scratching your eyeglasses as well as keeping the glare out of your eye when composing.

I use a ganeric eyecup becouse the "tear drop" shape is better at keeping out stray light that I find distracting. But these eyecups can venette your veiw screen if you don't hold the camera as close as possible.

So, there is no real reason to replace it? I thought it helped to keep stray light out of the actual exposure. I was reading in the manual that you need to use the eyepiece cover (the solid black cover) to keep light out of the cover when using remote to prevent light from entering the camera from the eyepiece.

When shooting remote there is nothing to block light from entering the viewfinder from the eyepiece and it can throw off the exposure. When you have the camera to your eye your head blocks the direct light and the stray light from the edges is negligible.

A complete light seal is not needed. It looks like I can get away with not having the rubber eye cup.

I remember there was an extra spare rubber cap, in the original package.
